The Chinchilla was first introduced to the western world in the 1500s. Chinchillas are very popular due to the thickness of their fur which is actually the thickest of any land mammal. Chinchillas that are handled by humans from a young age will be fairly tame and should usually form a close relationship with their own. There are cases though were the Chinchilla will not enjoy being held. Chinchillas are a nocturnal creature meaning that they are active at night and sleep during the day. Your chinchillas should be kept somewhere quiet during the day so that they are able to rest. Because the Chinchilla is an energetic and active pet it requires plenty of room to run around in.
