Second in the Guardians paranormal romance series revolving around the Guardians, beings endowed with angelic powers when that human dies giving his or her life to save another. The couple focus in this story is on Colin Ames-Beaumont and Savitri Murray.
My Take
Brook is good. So far, everything of hers that I've picked up is an excellent read. And she sure has one heck of an imagination! In this particular story, Colin is absolutely fascinated by Savi. There is nothing about her that does not intrigue him.
Colin is fascinating for his total obsession with himself and it seems that he has reason for it. He's the most beautiful man on earth and possibly above. Any hobby he takes up, he's brilliant whether it's painting or playing the piano or the violin. Or, as Savi discovers, making love.
I adore Savi for her brilliance. She is so amazingly intelligent, compassionate, and with a great sense of humor. Definitely a woman for the ages. She's why I cried and cried at the end...
The Story
The vampires of San Francisco are scared. Their elders were all killed and they are looking to Colin to step up and lead them. A position in which he has no interest. But one which Lilith and Hugh push at him with excellent reason. For a demon, Dalkiel, is working behind-the-scenes in San Francisco whipping the vampires into a frenzy and threatening Savi. Threatening new vampires. Threatening the continued existence of mankind.
Meanwhile, Savi and Nani are flying back to San Francisco from Mumbai via London. On the same flight that blew up over the Atlantic. The bodies recovered did not display any evidence consistent with an airliner blowing up and the nosferatu Savi comes across on the plane has all her senses on overload. Hey, it's Savi and she does all the right things except that her actions set her fate in motion. A fate that requires Savi spend lots of time with Colin. A man, the vampire she wants.
A wanting destined to end in tragedy??
The Characters
Colin Ames-Beaumont is the second son of an earl and feels fully entitled to the traditional occupations of a second son: drinking, wenching, and hanging out. Nor does he feel that he must conform to the vampire rules of drinking only from consorts, willing humans, and vampires. Instead, he helps himself to anyone he desires. Colin is unique; not only in his own mind either! He was turned over a month using nosferatu blood; anyone who drinks from him dies horribly. A curse he did not take seriously in 1821 has also created a tortured condition for Colin creating an anchor for him with Chaos. Looking in mirrors does not reveal Colin but the hellacious conditions twisting in that plane. Demon Moon reveals why Colin takes refuge in his own admiration and obsession with sartorial elegance.
Savitri "Savi" Murray is an Indian genius with a curiosity that just won't quit. She has written a book and created a popular video and card games based on a story she found on Hugh's computer. Um, she didn't realize it was not fiction at the time. Nani is Savi's grandmother; she runs a restaurant called Auntie's and she wants her Savi married. Safe. Protected.
Lilith, a.k.a., Agent Milton, is the daughter of Lucifer but sloughed daddy off and fell in love with Hugh Castleford, a fallen Guardian. They were instrumental in forcing Lucifer into closing the Gates of Hell for the next 500 years. Today they head up Special Investigations (SI), a paranormal department of Homeland Security. Sir Pup is Lilith's hellhound [I do love Sir Pup!]. Paul and Fia are a vampire and his human until Paul brings her over and they come to work for SI.
Caelum is the otherworld home of the Guardians. Michael is the first Guardian with all Guardian powers. Selah is another Guardian
The Cover
The cover is so not the story. Yes, Colin Ames-Beaumont is blond but he's also obsessed with proper dress. As for the Savi-wanna-be, her skin is the wrong color and I do not remember her having a tattoo on her back. Other than that, the
