European skepticism is a political view that criticizes or opposes the European Union. It is based on the idea that European integration weakens nation-states. It desires to slow down, stop, or reverse this integration. It has been a phenomenon since the founding of the European Union. However, in recent years, especially after the 2008 financial crisis and the 2016 Brexit referendum, European skepticism has become increasingly important. There are various reasons for European skepticism.
Some euroskeptic parties argue that the European Union violates the sovereignty of nation-states. Others believe that the European Union is too bureaucratic and inefficient, and that the European Union is not doing enough on issues such as migration, security, and the economy. This situation is affecting the decision-making mechanisms and structure of the European Union. It is of importance for the future of the European Union. The European Union needs to change some of its policies in this regard.
