Grundlage der Untersuchung bildet eine kognitiv-linguistische Analyse eines Korpus populärwissenschaftlicher Texte über das Gehirn.
Goschler zeigt, dass die Konzeptualisierung des Gehirns auf drei Typen von Metaphern beruht: Raummetaphern, Personifizierungen und technischen Metaphern. Diese drei Metapherntypen sind nicht nur im Bereich der Hirnforschung, sondern insgesamt kennzeichnend für die Übertragung konkreter auf abstrakte Konzepte und daher auch in anderen Wissenschaftsbereichen prägend für die Strukturierung abstrakter Forschungsgegenstände.
