Born in Rockford, IL., just outside of Chicago, Michael Derry escaped in the late 80’s to Northern Illinois University where he studied illustration and theater. He graduated in 1994 with a BFA in illustration and moved to Chicago to make a name as an illustrator and cartoonist. He instead got cast in several stage productions and after five years of acting and bartending, moved to LA to pursue acting. There he ended up doing illustration and animation (and more bartending) which lead to the creation of “Troy”.
As of 2011, he has been writing and drawing “Troy” for twelve years. In April of 2004, “Troy” was optioned by Envision Entertainment as a feature, for which Michael wrote the screenplay, and in true Hollywood fashion, it never got made. In June of 2005, several “Troy” strips were selected to appear in QCC’s “WAR” themed Queer Arts Festival ‘05 at SomArts Gallery in San Francisco alongside works from 32 other artists from 9 different countries. His other work through Derry Products includes magazine and commercial illustration, character design and animation for TV and the internet, greeting cards, and storyboards and comps for commercials.
He currently lives in West Hollywood. When he’s not working he likes to hang out with friends (who look eerily like a certain group of cartoon characters), watch movies, cook, read, lounge in the pool, and throw fabulous cocktail parties complete with maraschino cherries, little cocktail umbrellas, and groovy tunes.
