Ia juga dipanggil Dunia Melayu , Kepulauan Indo-Australia , Hindia Timur , Nusantara , Kepulauan Nusantara, dan nama-nama lain dari masa ke masa. Nama itu diambil dari konsep Eropah bangsa abad ke-19, kemudiannya berdasarkan pengedaran bahasa Austronesia . Terletak di antara Lautan India dan Pasifik , kumpulan lebih 25,000 pulau adalah kepulauan terbesar di kawasan, dan keempat dengan jumlah pulau di dunia . Ia termasuk Brunei , Singapura , Malaysia Timur , Indonesia , Filipina dan Timor Timur . He has published widely on the Indian Ocean and among his recent books are Eyes Across the Water: Navigating the Indian Ocean and The World of the Indian Ocean, 1500-1800: Studies in Economic, Social and Cultural History.
