Vingt-cinq siècles après sa fondation par les Phocéens, Marseille rencontre à nouveau les Grecs dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle. D'abord formée de minorités, cette colonie réduite va subir une mutation fondamentale à la fin de la première décennie du XIXe siècle, avec l'installation des descendants des dynasties archontales. Ces derniers initient un processus de fixation communautaire permettant de constituer un Nous grec, sans que cela les isole au sein de la société marseillaise.
