この電子書籍について

SuttaCentral has published an entirely new translation of the four Pali nikāyas by Bhikkhu Sujato, which is the first complete and consistent English translation of these core texts. This is an ebook version of Bhikkhu Sujato's translation of the Majjhima Nikāya, which can also be read at SuttaCentral website.

The Middle Discourses (Majjhima Nikāya, abbreviated MN) is a collection of 152 discourses in the Pali canon (Tipiṭaka) of the Theravada school of Buddhism. The word “middle” refers to the length of the individual discourses. This is perhaps the most popular collection of early discourses. It contains a wide variety of teachings, many of them presented as narratives between the Buddha and a diverse range of his contemporaries. The collection parallels the Madhyamāgama (MA) of the Sarvāstivāda school, which survives as a translation in the Chinese canon.

This translation of Majjhima Nikāya was updated on March 6th, 2023.

著者について

Bhikkhu Sujato, born Anthony Best (born November 4, 1966 in Perth) is an Australian Buddhist teacher and monk, who studies Buddhism in the forest monks tradition of Thailand. His main influences are the forest tradition, with its strict practice of the monk's discipline of Vinaya, the study of the early Buddhist suttas and the practice of loving kindness which he learnt from Ajahn Maha Chatchai. In his studies of the early suttas he was struck by the parallel texts preserved in the Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan texts, which he has presented as evidence that much of the original teachings of the Buddha were accurately preserved in these suttas. He also has a special interest in the ordination of women and the revival of the Bhikkhuni ordination in the Theravadin traditions. He was founded Santi Forest Monastery in 2003 and served as its abbot. He resigned as abbot, ceasing his duties on 3rd August 2012, to work on translation of the suttas into English, as one of the founders of SuttaCentral.
