Hundreds of composers are represented in this volume, which presents biographical data, including dates of birth and death, personal information about composers' background and training, and a selective listing of each composer's works. Sources for further study are noted within each entry. An index of composers by country rounds out this work.

Miguel Ficher is President of the Mary Louise Curtis branch of the Settlement Music School and a member of the Musical Fund Society, Philadelphia. Martha Furman Schleifer is Senior Editor of Hildegard Publishing Co. and a member of the music history faculty at Temple University, Pennsylvania. John M. Furman is a member of the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia.
