Das Werk "Moby-Dick; oder: Der Wal" (englisch "Moby-Dick; or, The Whale") ist ein 1851 in London und New York erschienener Roman von Herman Melville. Das erzählerische Rückgrat des Romans ist die schicksalhafte Fahrt des Walfangschiffes "Pequod", dessen Kapitän Ahab mit blindem Hass den weißen Pottwal Moby Dick jagt, der ihm ein Bein abgerissen hat. Entlang dieses erzählerischen Fadens, der knapp die Hälfte des Romans ausmacht, reiht Melville zahlreiche philosophische, wissenschaftliche, kunstgeschichtliche und mythologische Exkurse, zu denen noch viele subjektive, mal lyrische, mal auch ironische Betrachtungen des Autors kommen. In diesem Rahmen wird auch die Welt des Walfangs im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert detailreich dargestellt. Melville widmete seinen Roman "Moby-Dick" dem befreundeten Schriftsteller Nathaniel Hawthorne.
