ಈ ಉತ್ತರ ನಮಗೆ ಹೊಸ ದಾರಿ ತೋರಿಸಬೇಕು. ಹಳೆಗಾಲದ ಪಠ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಕಾಲದ ಒಂದೊಂದು ತಲೆಮಾರೂ ಹೀಗೆ ತನ್ನದೇ ಹುಡುಕಾಟದ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ಮರು-ಆವಿಷ್ಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ತುಂಬ ತುರ್ತಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಾದ ಒಂದು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬುಗೆಯನ್ನು ಇದು ಉದ್ದೀಪಿಸಬೇಕು. ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಸರಿಯೋ ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಎಂದೆಲ್ಲ ಚಿಂತಿಸುತ್ತ ಕೂರುವ ಬದಲು, ನಮ್ಮ ಅಂತರ್ಗತ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಗಳಿಂದ ತಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ನಮಗೆ ಸರಿಕಂಡಂತೆ ಇಂಥ ಪಠ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಜೀವಂತಗೊಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನಾವು ಒಡ್ಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲವಾದರೆ, ಪುತಿನ ಅವರು ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಭೋಗಾಪೇಕ್ಷೆ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವ ಗತಕಾಲದ ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಅನುಕರಣೆಯ ಉರುಳಿಗೆ ನಾವು ಸಿಲುಕುತ್ತೇವೆ; ನಾವೇ ತೋಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯೆಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಬಾವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಅಥವಾ, ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾದ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತ, ನಮ್ಮದೇ ನಾಡಿನ ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟುಗಳ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಕಾವ್ಯ ಕಟ್ಟುವ ಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನೂ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಮರೆತು, ಎರವಲು ನುಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತರ್-ಪಿಶಾಚಿಗಳಂತೆ ಚರ್ವಿತ ಚರ್ವಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತ ಕಾಲಯಾಪನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಮೋಡಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತು ಬರುತ್ತಾ, ಮೋಡದ ಭಾಷೆ ಇದೆಯಾ, ಎಂಬ ಸಂದೇಹ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಸ್ತವ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯ ವಾಚ್ಯಬುದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದೇ ಇದೆ. ಬೃಹದಾರಣ್ಯಕ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಆಖ್ಯಾಯಿಕೆಗೆ ಈ ಸಂದೇಹ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ದೇವತೆ ಮಾನವ ಅಸುರ ಮೂವರೂ ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿಯಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ, ನಮಗೆ ಹಿತನುಡಿಯನ್ನು ನುಡಿ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡರಂತೆ. ಆತ ‘ದ’ ಎಂದು ನುಡಿದು ಅರ್ಥವಾಯಿತೆ ಎಂದೂ ಕೇಳಿದ. ಅವರವರಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಅರ್ಥ ಅವರವರಿಗಾಯಿತು. ದ ಎಂದರೆ ದಮ-ಇಂದ್ರಿಯನಿಗ್ರಹ ಎಂದು ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ, ದಾನ-ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಎಂದು ಮನುಜರೂ, ದಯೆ-ಹಿಂಸಾವಿರತಿ ಎಂದು ಅಸುರರೂ ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರು.
ಈ ಆಖ್ಯಾಯಿಕೆಯ ಸಮಾಪನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪನಿಷದೃಷಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ: ತದೇತದೇವೈಷಾ ದೈವೀ ವಾಗನುವದತಿ ಸ್ತನಯಿತ್ನುಃ ದ ದ ದ ಇತಿ ದಾಮ್ಯತ ದತ್ತ ದಯಧ್ವಂ ಇತಿ ತದೇತತ್ ತ್ರಯಂ ಶಿಕ್ಷೇತ್. ‘ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷವೂ ಮುಂಗಾರು ಮೋಡವು (ಸ್ತನಯಿತ್ನು) ದ ದ ದ ಎಂಬ ಈ ಬೆಳಗುವ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಆಡುತ್ತಿದೆ, ನಿಗ್ರಹ ದಾನ ದಯೆ ಈ ಮೂರನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕು.’ ಮೇಘದೂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಕ್ಷನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಮೋಡಕ್ಕೆ ‘ಭ್ರಾತೃಜಾಯೆ’ (ಅತ್ತಿಗೆ), ಸಂತಪ್ತರಿಗೆ ತಂಪೆರೆಯುವ ದಯೆ, ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಜಲದಾನ. ‘ಸಂತಪ್ತಾನಾಂ ತ್ವಮಸಿ ಶರಣಂ ತತ್ಪಯೋದ’ ಮೋಡದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಹೆಸರು ಜಲದ ಅಥವಾ ಪಯೋದ. ನೈತಿಕತೆಯೇ ಅಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು, ನೈತಿಕತೆಯ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವೆ ಅಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಹೊರಟ ಋಷಿಗೆ ಮೋಡದ ಮಾತು ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ; ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆತನಿಗೆ ವಾಸ್ತವ ಅವಾಸ್ತವದ ಗೊಡವೆ ಇಲ್ಲ; ಗೋಡೆಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.

Born 24th April 1960, Akshara K.V. got his BA in literature at Sagara, and then got theatre training at National School of Drama, New Delhi and MA in theatre arts from the Workshop Theatre, University of Leeds, UK. He is associated with the Ninasam group of organizations as a teacher and theatre director as well as administrator. He also heads Akshara Prakashana, a prominent publishing house in the Kannada language. He has written 6 plays, directed more than 60 productions in Kannada, has taught theatre at Ninasam and elsewhere, and has presented papers in various seminars. He has published more than 30 books in Kannada, related to literature, theatre, cinema, culture and has translated essays and books related to culture and society from English. Three of his books have received the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi award, and he is also a recipient of the Karnataka Nataka Academy fellowship and the central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He has also received VM Inamdar Award, Kanthavara Kannada Sangha Award, BH Sridhara Prashasti and Alva’s Nudisiri Prashasti for his work in theatre and literature.
Kālidāsa was a Classical Sanskrit author who is often considered ancient India's greatest playwright and dramatist. His plays and poetry are primarily based on the Vedas, the Rāmāyaṇa, the Mahābhārata and the Purāṇas. His surviving works consist of three plays, two epic poems and two shorter poems.
Dr. Shrirama Bhatta is an accomplished Sanskrit and Kannada scholar and has written about both Kannada and Sanskrit language and literature. His sepecialisations include literary studies, philosophy and cultural studies. He retired as a Sanskrit professor from RV College Bangalore, and his doctoral research was on the influence of Classical Sanskrit poetry on premodern Kannada kavyas which has come out as a book published by Kannada Sahitya Parishat. He has written several other books: Shabdamarga, on Sanskrit terms in Gopalakrishna Adiga's poetry, Abhimukhi, lirerary critical essays, Jambavati Parinaya, Kannada transalation of Srikrishnadevaraya's Sanskrit work and Rasaprakasha, a poetics treatise by the eminent poet Putina, which he has edited with Dr. GS Shivarudrappa. He has worked as a resource person with several universities and has been a guest speaker at Akashavani and Doordarshan.
