About this ebook

Kids 8 - 12 years old.

A French marmot, her funny mountain mates, and their crazy, nocturnal, sports adventures!

Magali looked at Mishka. 'Did you hear that?'

'Psssssssssssssst!' The voice called again.

Higher up the mountain, four fox ears poked out of the long grass.

'Psssssssssssssst! Come on, Man! Come over!' F-F-Foxy's head popped up.

Then Little Foxy's head popped up.

'It's us! Come!' F-F-Foxy waved.

The little marmot looked up at the sun. She said to the fox, 'It's daytime.'

'We're not going to eat you!' F-F-Foxy called.

Little Foxy's tongue rolled out the side of his mouth as he stared at Magali's chubby body. 'But maybe we will!'

F-F-Foxy smacked his brother's head… Pow! Little Foxy's tongue flung over to the other side of his mouth.

F-F-Foxy waved to Magali and Mishka, who were still crouching behind their rock. 'Come!'

The marmot looked to the sun again.

F-F-Foxy stood up straight and said, 'Okay. We'll come to you. We are not going to eat you. Promise. This is a sports thing.'

The foxes race to meet the marmot and rabbit. F-F-Foxy explains that his uncle needs help getting the bobsleigh track ready for the Grand Reopening Night. New sleds need transporting, mats need to be fixed, and the track needs to be cleaned! Animals from all over the mountain are going to pitch in.

Magali is unsure. Her parents don't let her go out at night. Will she sneak out each night to help?

Question for the Author

How did you come up with the character of Magali?

'You know, I really love the French Alps, and looking at all the animals that live in the mountains. I'm Australian, so I had never seen a marmot before moving to France. I worked one summer, for a kids' summer camp, and part of my job was to take the children out on walks. We would go looking for marmots, all of us being very quiet, secretly sneaking up to the holes in the ground, where the entrances to the marmot burrows were. Of course, we would make too much noise and the marmots would disappear into their underground tunnels, but sometimes we were lucky and able to take photos. I think their underground homes took over my imagination, and before you knew it, I had a whole chapter book in my head, with Magali as the principal character!'

About the author

Muddy Frank writes humorous children's action and adventure books for ages 9-12.

She lives in a ski resort in France.

'I see the Mt Blanc from my balcony every day. I love it because I grew up in Australia by the beach, so this is so different. I like the food that comes with the alps lifestyle; the fondue, the steaks, the mulled wine. Before France, I lived in the UK. Love the London markets. I also lived in Spain. Love the jamon iberico. I'm a fan of the south of France too, can't get enough of the colour of the mediterranean sea. Anyway..., I travel, I observe and I stash away ideas in my head, and then I sit in my mountain pad, and I write.'
