I loved this book. Each book in the expanse is a little different, and this one is no exception. It was interesting to see the characters apart for some much of the book (even though that happened to an extent in Cibola Burn). That being said, for me it did have a similar feel to the Holden side of Leviathan Wakes, which I liked. I think the series has had enough variety so far that it can start revisiting themes a bit more. I want to say that this is the book where the stakes get raised, but in truth they're been equally high in every book of the series. Maybe this is just the first book where things really go badly. It was great seeing each of the crew with their own viewpoint chapters. Naomi is just amazing. Alex really is the under-appreciated glue of the team. Amos, wow, did I enjoy his viewpoint. From his first chapter I was just smiling or laughing away. I would recommend reading The Churn first. In general the novellas are not required reading, but in this case it gives you just a bit more background and significance to some of the characters (plus it is itself a good read).

It was nice to finally get the perspectives of the crew, and not these random characters signature to one book. Also, Amos's trip to Earth was SO COOL. Very interesting sub plot, I often found myself look forward to Amos's perspective. Naomi's could have been a bit less repetitive, Holden's was a little boring. Alex's was excellent as well, but the first few chapters of his perspective were very slow moving. But Amos's story alone is worth a 5 star.

Things start off a weird. There are a lot of mechanized things all over the place, but unless you've watched or read other sci-fi's , you wouldn't know what these are. Even then, all mechanized things may now seem borrowed and the image of the book mutate to your favorite sci-fi.
