Helm has created a beautifully picturesque and wildly original novel that takes readers deep into the lives of ranchers today, barely eeking out a living, struggling for everything they have. At the same time, she’s thrown in some twists that are very poignant. This tale was chock full of emotions and hardships. Everything is right there, in your face, forcing you to face it. The characters in this novel are very well developed. I found that I got to know them very well. The relationships between them were also well laid out, and never easy. The complicated relationships were so real that I found them easy to picture. The various relationships I can’t go into the relationship between the main characters without having some massive spoilers, but let’s just say that it irked me the wrong way more than once. This may not be my favourite novel by this talented author, but I definitely did enjoy it. It’s a good read on its own or as part of the series. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.
