About the author

Nikolai Leskov (1831–1895) was one of Russia’s greatest writers. Anton Chekhov considered him his “teacher,” and Tolstoy hailed his courageous, anti-nihilist writing. Among his best-known works is Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.
