In recent discussions on marriage equality, the notion of familial bonds, which was important in early discussions on non-binary family research, has been decentered in favor of legal and homonormative understandings of individual rights. Brian Joseph Gilley is Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington. He is the author of Becoming Two-Spirit and co-editor of Queer Indigenous Studies and Queering the Countryside.
