Perhaps it was the characters themselves more than the way they were written that made this story feel forced. Although I found myself wondering how Catherine's story would play out even when it had been days since picking up the book, I still had to coax myself to finish each chapter. I'm glad I read it, but unlike most of her other novels I have no need to read it again.

It does not rank among my favorite of Jane Austen's books but is nevertheless very entertaining and as true to Jane Austen's particular style and tone as her more popular books.
As always, an intriguing insight to a world where "a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."

Not one of Ms. Austen's greatest love stories, Northanger Abbey spends the bulk of the book satirizing the over-the-top nature of many contemporary novels. Sadly, the book is unsteady with some parts reveling in satire while others move through the plot at a slow pace. The beginning is too long and the ending is quite rushed. Still, fans of Ms. Austen's work will find her wit and humor within this novel.
