My Murakami first and most loved. Written beautifully, in a flowing manner and capturing descriptions. This one really got me hooked on murakami and its novels. It's been almost years since I first read it. i since read it many times, and I still cry at same places throughout the novel. Murakami has the ability to make you fell oh -so-very close to his characters, and you feel as if your friend is telling you about his life. The characters linger on within you afterwards. I should say that the characters may be Japanese, but their behavior is a mix of Western openess and independent thinking and of Japanese manners and strong independence. So, in that aspect, it does not depict the Japanese that I saw and met during my trip to Japan. If you like this book, you should also read "south of the border, west of the sun". LOVE this book as well. Enjoy
