Elizabeth Fry was John Gurney's sister. Together, the pair visited 33 prisons in August and September 1818, including those in York, Liverool, Manchester, Newcastle, Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glascow, with general remarks following the specific commentary on each jail.
