Observatory Mansions was once the Orme family's ancestral home. Now it is a crumbing apartment block, stranded on a traffic island and peopled with eccentrics. Edward Carey was born in 1970. Both of his novels, Observatory Mansions and Alva and Irva, are published by Picador. He lives in London and France.
