As an easy book to read, the engaging narrative perspective and colorful characters reminded me of large stained glass windows in a cathedral. It can be enjoyed for it's simple beauty and lyric expression. Or you can sit longer and contemplate the deeper implications of the message. While loosely following the apocryphal book of Tobit, Buechner has woven a classic tale. The book is neither preachy or aloof in its religious temperament, but presents a very plausible setting for the characters. Their reactions and thoughts are all in perfect harmony with the setting and circumstances. Readers will find themselves immersed in the adventures of Tobias and Azarias, irregardless of individual religious convictions. As a traveler's tale, this book would make for great reading on a long road trip. Or give a copy to someone enjoys the journey of life almost as much as the destination.

Frederick Buechner, author of more than thirty works of fiction and nonfiction, is an ordained Presbyterian minister. He has been a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and was honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
