Ms. Humphrey is my all-time favorite author in this genre and my favorite Texan author. All the books in the Schatzenburg series are interesting and difficult to stop reading. Interesting story lines with realistic and good characters with clean, believable dialogue, and very importantly, no Stupidity Formula. The characters communicate and do not practice immature, ridiculous, destructive behaviors. Relaxing and enjoyable stories about family, romance, love and community make the foundation that Ms. Humphrey, and Ms. Carrington, build upon in every series. The Secrets Love Kept - Such an enjoyable story that holds true to the times, thoughts and morals of that era. A realistic glimpse into a small town set outside of San Antonio, with heroes, everyday people doing their best, a bit of corruption, a terrible tragedy, and the serendipitous joy that a betrayal found. Sweet, funny, serious, filled with emotions and life during the early Forties, and during and after WWII. Source: ARC. 5

Coming of Age in the 1940s This is a slow-moving, coming-of-age story set in the early 1940s in a small town. Events occur that have rippling, long-lasting effects on several young people's lives. This feels more like a character study, a well-done one, but most of the action seems to take place within the hearts and minds of the characters involved rather than being fixed on the outside events. The characters are well differentiated, believable, and relatable. The complexity of emotions and the societal context make for a gripping read. The author has done a good job showing what such a different time was like. Even though there are many still alive who remember those times, they feel so foreign. A well-done, heartfelt read. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
