Nama beliau al-Hafiz al-Muqriβ Syamsuddin Abu al-Khair Muhammad
bin Muhammad bin Ali bin Yusuf ad-Dimasyqi as-Syafie. Beliau
masyhur dengan gelaran Ibnu al-Jazari.
Dilahirkan di Damsyiq pada malam sabtu 25 Ramadhan tahun 751H.
Membesar di Damsyiq, selesai menghafal al-Quran pada umur 13 tahun.
Pada umur 14 tahun sudah menjadi imam solat bagi penduduk
sekitarnya. Mula bertalaqqi qiraat secara ifrad (satu persatu) dengan
guru-guru beliau iaitu Syeikh Abd Wahab bin as-Sallar, Syeikh Ahmad
bin Ibrahim as-Shohhan dan Syeikh Ahmad bin Rajab pada umur 15
tahun.
Sepanjang hayat beliau, kerap kali menunaikan haji dan melakukan
rehlah ke negara Mesir. Setiap kali itulah beliau akan bertemu dengan
imam-imam besar dalam bidang al-Quran dan bertalaqqi al-Quran
dengan mereka.
