About the Book Passing the Baton tells stories of the author experiences with the Baltimore Police Department, beginning with the tradition of passing the nightstick, or baton. Starting with his life as a small boy, and on through high school and a stint in the Navy, George Parsons chronicles what led him to his career with the Police Department. The stories follow his exploits in the many different divisions in which he worked, including patrol districts, K-9, the Marine Unit, the Emergency Vehicle Unit and the Arson Unit. Some of the stories are serious, some are humorous, but all show what it is really like working the streets of a big city. You will also learn how he uses these experiences in his current position as an Instructor/Coordinator, helping young men and women realize their dreams of a career in law enforcement.

About the author

George Parsons background includes four years in the military, serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Enterprise from 1969 to 1973 and completing two tours in Vietnam. He entered the Baltimore City Police Department, starting in patrol. From there, he transferred to the Tactical Section with assignments in K-9, Marine Unit, and Emergency Vehicle Unit (Bomb Squad). After being promoted to Sergeant, his assignments included a return to patrol as a Sector Sergeant, the Narcotics Unit and Community Relations. His final assignment was that of Detective Sergeant/Arson Unit Commander. He retired in 1992 and spent ten years as a fraud investigator. In 2002, George went to work for the Northeast Florida Criminal Justice Training and Education Center for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office as a Training Specialist teaching all areas of Law Enforcement and Corrections, as well as In-service Training. In 2005 also was a full time Coordinator/Instructor at Saint Johns River State College, Criminal Justice Training and Education Center in Saint Augustine, FL. He is FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) instructor certified in General Subjects, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, First Aid and Vehicle Operations. He is also Lead Instructor for FEMA Incident Command Systems. George holds an AA Degree in Criminal Justice and a BS Degree in Sociology. He holds an US Merchant Marine Officer US Coast Guard Captain License and has attended the National Fire Academy and Federal Law Enforcement Training Center for Fire Arson Investigation.
