About the author

Pauline Anderson is Head of and a principal lecturer in Sociology and Women’s Studies at the University of Wolverhampton. She entered higher education as a mature student and has researched women’s unemployment and the operation of gender inequalities in the science and technological industries. Jenny Williams was a lecturer in Sociology and Head of Women’s Studies at the University of Wolverhampton until she retired in 1998. She has written extensively on aspects of educational policy and higher education, particularly equal opportunities, anti-racist policies and widening participation. She is currently a freelance researcher.
