OH MY GOD, there is just so much going on within the pages of Motion that I do not know where to start. Motion barely scratches the surface of the plot while laying a foundation for the characters to develop through the course of the Laws of Physics trilogy. Told from Mona’s perspective; girl genius, twin and all round adorkable, I fell for Mona from the beginning, although my heart also ached for her for the same length of time. There is a lot going on below the surface where Mona is concerned, from having to deal with her genius IQ and forfeiting part of her emotional development as well as acting as a balance to her twin sister’s wild-child ways. Mona has let events in her past shape the person she has become; these events are revealed slowly through the narrative and I am positive there are still a lot more to uncover especially concerning her unusual family dynamic. The snippets that are uncovered only serve to endear Mona further and aid understanding especially to Mona’s ability to distance herself from her emotions. However, it is also this ability which prevents Mona from establishing connections to people keeping her apart from her peers and widening the gap in her character development. Forced into a situation to aid her rebellious twin, Lisa, Mona finds herself exploring parts of her personality she has long-ago kept buried. A large portion of Mona’s self-analysis is due to her interactions with Abram; with whom she connects with in a way she hasn’t with anyone else before. Abram appears to appreciate Mona for who she is in all her socially-awkward glory, the only problem is Abram thinks Mona is, in fact, Lisa. Again, insight into Abram’s identity has been sporadic, made up of hearsay and preconceived notions based on stereotypes. However, Abram proves to be more than the rumours would suggest. I would love to see his point of view. Just when you think Mona has made a significant breakthrough Penny Reid pulls the rug from under the reader with a mega-cliffhanger – seriously I need SPACE. Seriously I should deduct marks for the wait and having my heart in a vice while that wait takes place 😁

4.5 stars--MOTION is the first instalment in Penny Reid’s contemporary, new adult LAWS OF PHYSICS romance series focusing on nineteen-year old, physics genius Mona Tang, and twenty-three year od musician Abram. LAWS OF PHYSICS is the second trilogy in the author’s HYPOTHESIS series but can be read as a stand alone series without any difficulty. Abram was first introduced in the Elements of Chemistry series (a subset of the Hypothesis series) Told from first person perspective (Mona Tang) MOTION follows nineteen year old, physics genius Mona Tang, as she agrees to impersonate her identical twin sister in the aftermath of a phone call revealing nothing good was about to take place. Mona’s twin sister Lisa is desperate for our heroine to return to Chicago and pretend to be her twin but Mona’s return to Chicago to finds our heroine face to face with musician Abram, a man whom Lisa had a brief but tumultuous past. Abram has been relegated as the full-time babysitter for Mona’s sister Lisa but Mona discovers that posing as her sister brings with it all kinds of probabilities including the possibility of falling in love. What ensues is the slow building relationship and friendship between Mona and Abram, and the potential fall-out as Mona’s time as Lisa is about to come to an end. Mona is the socially-awkward twin; introverted and reclusive, Mona prefers books to boys, research to parties; clean-living to drunken one-night stands. Posing as her exuberant and troubled sister Lisa, Mona struggles to remain in character as she slowly begins to fall for her house-mate and guard. Abram’s previous meeting with Lisa was all kinds of wrong but this ‘new’ version of Lisa brings with it the potential for something more. The relationship between Mona and Abram is based on a series of secrets and lies. Always in trouble, Lisa ‘forces’ Mona to impersonate her twin but in doing so pushes Mona into a situation that is quickly getting out of control. There is no sex, no romance just the palpable sexual attraction between our leading couple. The back and forth banter between characters is fast, energetic and animated. Mona’s continuous inability to remain in character comes with the bumbling diatribes of an awkward genius-a sassy but sensitive heroine whose grasp on relationships is affected by her past. The premise is fascinating and captivating; the characters are cheeky and energetic. MOTION is a wonderful introduction to Penny Reid’s new LAWS OF PHYSICS trilogy. MOTION ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger-you have been warned.

***5 Stars*** *Sharp inhalation of breath as my finger wildly taps the edge of the kindle and I realize there are NO. MORE. WORDS* No. NO NO NO NO...GAH… *Slow exhalation of that breath as I pout* Yes. I knew there was going to be a lovely (not so lovely) little (not so little) cliffy, but it still doesn’t negate my reaction because of how invested I became in Mona and Abram...Well, mostly Mona at this point in time, though this isn’t to say that I’m not into Abram because he is quite fascinating and I’m definitely feeling him. But, Mona is kind of everything. She’s unique, sweet, adorkable and I LOVE her mind. It’s that mix of complex and simple that I love because it keeps me on my toes and has me waiting to see what she will do next. As for the situation Mona finds herself in with Abram. It definitely had my gut twisted up in knots because while I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, I kept flip flopping over HOW I felt about the situation. Half of my mind kept chanting “Don’t do it. Don’t do it.” while the other half was chanting “Do it. Do it.” and they weren’t always for the same reasons. I know, it makes no sense whatsoever, but it will when you read it, because there was so much goodness going on between Abram and Mona that it was hard not to cheer for them, even knowing what could happen. This book had me on pins and needles the entire time. The feels I had about the characters and the situation they were in were intense and real and it has me worried about what is coming up next ~ since this IS just the first book in the trilogy ~ but also has me NEEDING Space in my hands like...yesterday. But since that isn’t going to happen I shall do my best to #practicepatience even as my mind drives me wonky with theories about what will happen next! ~ Copy provided by Social Butterfly PR & voluntarily reviewed ~
