This volume analyses a significant number of medieval Galician-Portuguese cantigas of derision which focus particularly on sexual matters. It features a textual commentary and also paraphrases the cantigas in contemporary Galician, while offering a corresponding English translation. These texts provide an insight into the mentality of the Iberian Peninsula’s medieval elites in the very relevant matters of legitimacy and transmission of lineage. They also illustrate how the concept of fun in medieval courts included mockery and the inversion of their own value system, as well as the most irreverent and grotesque exaggeration.
