In den Trümmern Berlins trifft der Erzähler Gesine, eine Freundin aus besseren Tagen, und schenkt ihr Perlhuhnfedern, die er wiederum zuvor von einem Freund erhalten hatte. Von ihrer Vermieterin erfährt er: "Den Tag über im Buchladen, und abends sitzt sie hier im Stuhl und sagt gar nichts, und nachts träumt sie, dass ich's in meinem Zimmer höre." Was die Vermieterin nicht weiß, sie träumt von Carlo, dem Künstler, der bei einem Bombenangriff in den Trümmern seines Hauses verschüttet wurde. Und dem Erzähler wird klar, dass sich in Gesine verwirklicht, was Carlo ihr einst gesagt hatte: "Das große Gefühl steht nicht am Anfang. Kann es gar nicht."
