Poetry is a mystery to many modern readers. As it no longer occupies a large space in modern cultural life, many readers feel distant from poetry, or simply feel that they don’t understand it.The poems in this book are intended to give the modern reader a taste of different types of poems—different eras, different cultures, and different topics are covered. In addition, the book offers vocabulary and concepts that allow the reader to talk intelligently about poems.

Although this book is a companion text for the free edX.org course “College Writing 11.2x, AP® English Literature and Composition: Poems,” offered through UC Berkeley, it is suitable for anyone who wants to learn more about poetry.

درباره نویسنده

Maggie Sokolik received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from UCLA. She is the author of over twenty ESL and composition textbooks. She has also written for and been featured in several educational video projects in Japan. She is the editor of TESL-EJ, a peer-reviewed journal for ESL/EFL instructors.

She is currently the Director of College Writing Programs at UC Berkeley, where she has worked for over 20 years. She travels frequently to speak about grammar, writing, and instructor education, most recently in Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, and Bulgaria.

She is a finalist for the edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning Prize of 2016, awarded at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, in November.
