Renko is again out on the fringes, doggedly going through the motions of investigation, knowing he draws ever closer to truth and death. More than others in the series, I cringed, waiting for the ax to fall as Renko plods into ever more dangerous territory. The unstoppable force is caught between a rock and a hard place, and there is no avoiding what will either hurt him very badly or kill him. Soviet life in nutshell, he thinks. Well-crafted and satisfying.

Smith's gift for writing great novels is iced this time with the bittersweet return of the hero of Gorky Park.
About the author
Martin Cruz Smith’s novels include Gorky Park, Stallion Gate, Polar Star, Stalin’s Ghost, Rose, December 6, Tatiana, and The Girl from Venice. He is a two-time winner of the Hammett Prize, a recipient of Britain’s Golden Dagger Award, and a winner of the Premio Piemonte Giallo Internazionale. He lives in California.
