Born in 1911 into a close-knit family, Mary Rebecca Chambers (known to all as Polly) spent her formative years in the heart of the East End. Jeff Smith was born in Stratford in 1945. He spent his career in the nuclear industry before being ordained as a Methodist minister, from which he retired last year.
