Jean Edwards, Maine native and a child of the Great Depression, remembers well the disastrous fire of 1947 when many of the beautiful Bar Harbor mansions were lost. The lasting impression of that sad October prompted her to write this novel that revives the elegance of the era before that fire. Descriptive poetry throughout the book aids the reader to envision life of the rich and privileged, as well as the workers who assisted them in their elegant lifestyles. This mixture of the wealthy and the less advantaged, presents a montage of surprises.
