Mi Criterio positivo della penalità (Nápoles, 1880) fue mi primer ensayo de una nueva teoría de la represión, pero sólo más tarde he podido desarrollar aquel plan. La Criminología (Turín, 1885) ha suscitado muchas críticas por parte de los juristas, así como también muchas objeciones por parte de los sabios, las cuales me han dado ocasión para mejor explicar y desarrollar mis ideas, y quizá para rectificar algunos errores de detalle".
