I really enjoyed this novel. The visual and emotional description is vivid and eloquent, and the book generally promotes its premise of revolution and turmoil in China. It is a bit wordy and slow, with any advancement of the story usually meeting a setback that stalls progress. It reminds me of the problems people have with the Game of Thrones series of books, too wordy with description that doesn't feel integral to the story. However, I felt that the descriptions and details added to the relatability.

About the author
Shen Yanbing (1896-1981), better known by the pen name Mao Dun, was a member of the generation that created a truly vernacular Chinese literature in the early twentieth century. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he was named Minister of Culture. Madeleine Zelin is Professor of Chinese History and East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University. She is the author of The Magistrate's Tael (California, 1984).
