सुषमा गुप्ता का जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के अलीगढ़ शहर में सन् 1943 में हुआ। उन्होंने आगरा विश्वविद्यालय से समाज शास्त्र और अर्थशास्त्र में एम.ए. किया और फिर मेरठ विश्वविद्यालय से बी.एड.। सन् 1976 में ये नाइजीरिया चली गईं। वहाँ उन्होंने यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ इबादन से लाइब्रेरी साइंस में एम.एल.एस. किया और एक थियोलॉजीकल कॉलेज में दस वर्षों तक लाइब्रेरियन का कार्य किया। भिन्न-भिन्न देशों में रहने के कारण उन्हें अपने कार्यकाल में वहाँ की बहुत सारी लोककथाओं को जानने का अवसर मिला— कुछ पढ़ने से, कुछ लोगों से सुनने से और कुछ ऐसे साधनों से जो केवल उन्हीं को उपलब्ध थे। इसलिए उन्होंने न्यूनतम हिंदी पढ़ने वालों को ध्यान में रखते हुए उन लोककथाओं को हिंदी में लिखना प्रारंभ किया। इन लोककथाओं में अफ्रीका, एशिया और दक्षिणी अमेरिका के देशों की लोककथाओं पर अधिक ध्यान दिया गया है पर उत्तरी अमेरिका और यूरोप के देशों की भी कुछ लोककथाएँ सम्मिलित की गई हैं। उनके द्वारा अभी तक 1200 से अधिक लोककथाएँ हिंदी में लिखी जा चुकी हैं। उन्हें ‘देश-विदेश की लोककथाएँ’ शृंखला में प्रकाशित करने का प्रयास किया जा रहा है।
