Suitable for undergraduates and beginning graduate students of physics and the history of science, this volume begins with an exploration of ancient Greek celestial mechanics and the seventeenth-century scientific revolution incited by Kepler's work. Subsequent chapters examine vector spaces and their applications, elementary differential geometry, particle dynamics, displacement and kinematics, theories of light, and the special theory of relativity.

Robert Catesby Taliaferro (1907–87) was a mathematician, philosopher, and historian of science. He translated several ancient Greek and Latin works into English and taught at the University of Notre Dame from 1952 until his retirement in 1972.Alexander Hahn is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame.Thomas F. Banchoff is Professor of Mathematics at Brown University.Frederick J. Crosson (1926–2009) was the John J. Cavanaugh Professor Emeritus of Humanities at the University of Notre Dame.
