About the author

Raymond Vieussens (1641?-1715), a dissector, was among the first to study the chemistry of the blood and saliva. His exploration of the heart and blood vessels was recorded in three volumes issued late in his life. He was also the first to record the symptoms of aortic insufficiency and mitral stenosis, to describe the character of the pulse and the pathologic features with clarity and thoroughness.
