The author misappropriated a language to add 'spice' to their book. Gàidhlig is a language that needs protected, preserved & promoted rather than used as lazy world-building zest to sprinkle on top of their story. They unashamedly butchered the language by telling people how to pronounce the words that they themself could not pronounce or understand. They were profoundly disrespectful. I hope readers can spend some time learning about Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig). It is a wonderful language - problematically pummelled across the world by the ignorantly incorrect Fourth Wing. (It was fair to give the book a try - due to my criticism of the author.) I toiled - but tried - to get through what I could; I wish the author had spent a fraction of the time learning gàidhlig as I spent scraping my brain through this. A lot of fantasy is derivative - but this read like a 'fan-fiction' from someone that has only ever read a synopsis of books they're ripping apart. It's Fifty Shades Of Glas.

I've just finished the 2nd book as I simply couldn't put them down. I have no idea how I am going to make it until then next book comes out (definitely by reading them both again) If there was one thing I could say that may improve the readers experience it would be to ask that the books contain a pronunciation page at the beginning, i've read a fire in the flesh series which does this and i feel you get a better experience when you know your not second guessing characters name's. My attempts at guessing the correct names of the dragons were so far off, that I ended up finding videos of other readers giving us the pronunciations and the meaning of the words, which ended up making so much sense after, for example Tairn's name means thunder and Andarna's means the second honor.

Let me summarize what I liked and disliked about this book Likes: - Love the concept of the book. Who doesn't love dragons? and dragon riding? - It has all the tropes, enemies to lovers, slow burn, 'I'll kill anyone who touches you' - I loved the dynamics between the characters, it was really fun to read Dislikes: - There isn't as much description on the characters' appearances and the setting as I would've liked. For example, until now I don't really know how Rhiannon looks like and she's the FMC's best friend. - The pacing was great the first 200 pages and last 100 pages or so, the middle was kind of... meh. It moved too slow for my liking. - Unfortunately, I could see the plot twists coming. - I would really love to read more about the background of the dragon, instead of how the FMC was lusting over the love interest so much Was it a mind blowing read? No. Did I enjoy it? Yes.
