Time is then set back seventy years, and we find him in about the year 1840, a boy at the Military School in Paris, fighting a duel with a comrade, de Moulny, who is wounded owing to Hector’s accidentally falling. Hector takes an oath never to touch a penny of the money infamously acquired, while de Moulny in return swears to be his friend till death. Shortly afterwards they are estranged by the circulation of a false report that Hector’s fall was intentional and that he had wounded de Moulny by a trick.
