On visiting his old friend Alan Thurston, Sir Richard Ford is surprised to discover that Alan's new bride Eveleen is a woman he has reason to believe is a notorious adventuress and probable murderer. But Ford's first priority is finding a safe haven for Alan's previous fiancée, Doris Owen, whose mother has imposed on Alan's hospitality in hopes of receiving some financial consideration for her daughter's disappointment. Ford secures a governess position for Doris with friends, but Eveleen is not satisfied with having her rival out of the house: having already tired of her new husband, she arranges to have him murdered in a fashion that will implicate Doris.
