About this ebook

"MODERN HARMONY, STEP BY STEP" is a book devoted to the study and understanding of modern harmony and its different musical styles, including Jazz, Blues, Rock, Funk and Pop, among others. This 166-page book is divided into five chapters which are organized to help you progress step by step, as if you were taking a course.

With this book you will learn how to build and apply major and minor scales, modal and artificial scales, arpeggios, diatonic and non-diatonic chords and their related tensions. Furthermore, you will find the tools needed for composing and analyzing modern music and applying all these techniques to the art of improvisation.

Hundreds of examples illustrate the different concepts explained in each section, providing a practical way to bring theory to your musical instrument.

Tries to pack too much theory into 110 pages. It's starts explaining theory for beginners, then goes full throttle into intermediate territory for a few chapters. The last 2/3 of the book I suspect will be new material for said intermediates, and review for advanced players. I couldn't imagine trying to use this to learn harmonic theory out of the gate. Again, too much theory--not enough concise explanations and examples for beginners and intermediate theorists to understand the material. I do think much was lost in the translation; theory should not be this difficult to grasp. (Credentials: 40 years experience.)
