Lise Meitner (1878-1968), fisica nucleare, studiò a Berlino i presunti prodotti derivati dall'uranio dopo che Enrico Fermi scoprì che l'uranio si trasformava in nuovi elementi (1934). Costretta a fuggire durante la guerra, lascia ai suoi collaboratori, Hahn e Strassmann, la continuazione del progetto di ricerca. Nel 1939 i due annunciano che l'atomo d'uranio sottoposto a radiazioni si scinde davvero in elementi più leggeri. Successivamente Lise Meitner e Otto Robert Frisch spiegano la fissione nucleare, stimolando le ricerche che approderanno alla bomba atomica. Nel 1945 Otto Hahn riceve, lui solo, il Premio Nobel. Questa fiction teatrale descrive lo stato d'animo, tormentato, della scienziata a cui è stata preclusa la meritata fama.
