Walter Rice was born and raised in San Francisco, but has lived in Sacramento for the last 30 years. He has a M.A. in Political Science, 1969 from UC Santa Barbara, and a B.A. from San Francisco State College in 1966. After attending Junior College he attended U C Berkeley from 1964-65, where he was active in the Free Speech Movement, and was arrested in the Sproul Hall sit-in. That is where he was exposed to political activism that would be a big part of his life. Walter would later channel his political activism into labor activism, as a member from SEIU Local 1000 and retired as a California state worker, a computer programmer and programmer analyst. In over 28 years as a state worker Walter was a union steward for 22 years, and a delegate to Sacramento Central Labor Council for about 14 years. He fought for rank and file union democracy, and was one of the founders of Caucus for a Democratic Union. Walter served in many different offices in SEIU Local 1000, two different stints the at the bargaining table a negotiator for Unit 1, was a District President and was a Regional Director for then parent organization California State Employees Association. Walter is “for socialism but there is no answer. Socialism is just not predatory, and it opposes creating a world of haves and have not’s. However, history tells us tyranny can take over any system. We must fight against dictators, and for the right to disagree”. Walter was member of the Sacramento Democratic County Central Committee for five years. “Unless we can get beyond 5000 followers and get into the hundreds of thousands we will have to work within the Democratic Party. It may be dirty work, but that’s where the Left is going to be. I don’t know why we can’t keep our own identify that way, and still oppose all the things that we ought to oppose.”
