About this ebook

What actually became of the indentured servants and bonded immigrants who arrived in America during the colonial period? Were they able to cast off the shackles that had brought them here in the first place, and how long did it take? For his latest book, genealogist Robert Barnes traces the fortunes of more than 500 Maryland debtors. The main purpose of this work is to chronicle and categorize the life experiences of 519 persons who entered Maryland as indentured servants or, to a lesser extent, as convicts forcibly transported.

This book is chock-full of valuable genealogical information. However, as is always the case in family tree research, read carefully. In the pages of information about the family that I was researching, there were some obvious errors: A third husband was promoted to second husband. A son was listed in wills and land transfers, but not cited as a member of his generation. A will was probated before it was written. Nonetheless, I do recommend the book.

Would have been nice to be able to see an index of names before purchasing as no one I am researching is included .
