Ratings and reviews

Although the story itself is well written, I found myself increasingly frustrated with the struggles of the main character. Every time he gets up, someone pushes him down harder. The romantic plotline is filled with 10 parts pain for every one part affection. By the start of the third book I have sworn to never read from this author again.

Life isn't always clean; it's not usually quite this messy either. With one like this, you can enjoy the story while wondering how things could continually get so far out of alignment for the main character. He needs to make better choices, but in the moment can't see how it would improve his lot. But the wolf, now, there is a character! Not something I've ever encountered in the genre before! An engaging story.

I am absolutely in love with anything Robin Hobb. It's currently been about 2 months since I finished the last of everything currently available by her and my heart still hurts. The only bad thing to be said is that these books will almost ruin you, when it comes to finding anything to read afterwards. As stated before, I'm 2 months out and still have yet to find a book that comes anywhere close to Robin Hobb's ability to draw you in. Completely worth it though!
