About the author
Author biography:
Rodney began his career as a primary school teacher in 1966 at Lameroo Area School, in rural South Australia. Following national service in the army, he resumed teaching in Adelaide, but began to write educational books for various publishers.
‘There’s a Dinosaur in the Park!’ was his first picture book. The idea came to him when his son (then 3 years old) ran inside from a playground nearby and said, “I saw a dinosaur in the park. He lives under the trees. He has fierce round eyes.’
After 14 years of teaching, Rodney became a full-time author and editor. He now has two ‘grown up’ children and lives in Adelaide, South Australia with his partner Sandra and dog Jessie.
Illustrator biography:
John Siow was born in South-East Asia, but came to Adelaide on a scholarship and stayed. He studied art and worked for some time for a publisher as an illustrator and designer. At this time he met Rodney Martin by designing and illustrating some of his educational books. John told Rodney that if her ever write a picture book, then he would like to illustrate it. So when the text to ‘There’s a Dinosaur in the Park!’ was written, Rodney took it to John. He took three and a half years to finish the illustrations.
The technique John used was mainly coloured inks with a fine nib in a cross-hatching style. The colours were gradually mixed through different layers of colours.
