Such a magnificent masterpiece in the original French; a mediocre old translation gets most of this right, but I had to read it in both languages, and wish there were a better new translation. Cannan makes too many mistakes, and misses the music in Rolland's work. Sad to say, too many really outmoded ideas, too much politically incorrect view on women, Jews, national stereotypes, will probably prevent English speakers from demanding an improved translation.
