'Romance' is a novel by Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford that follows the many misfortunes of the protagonist, John Kemp. After being mistaken for a smuggler, Kemp leaves England with his cousin Carlos and companion Castro, only to later part ways with them. He is then nearly arrested and killed before being forced to rejoin his cousin and Castro. Kemp becomes betrothed to Serafina, but they are later pursued by an Irish nationalist named O'Brien and his followers. Kemp, Serafina, and Castro escape on a ship and hide on an island, but are unable to escape O'Brien's followers.
