Nach einem feuchtfröhlichen Fest in der Dorfwirtschaft des kleinen Alpendorfes wird Franz Hofmayr tot aufgefunden. Kurz darauf wird Niklas Stettner wegen Totschlags zu fünf Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt. Dieser beteuert zwar verzweifelt seine Unschuld, war aber an dem Abend so betrunken, dass er sich an nichts mehr erinnern kann.
Nach Verbüßung der Haft kehrt der einst so lebensfrohe Niklas völlig gebrochen auf den elterlichen Hof zurück. Doch die Schande klebt an ihm wie Pech, niemand im Alpendorf will etwas mit ihm zu tun haben. Einziger Lichtblick im Leben des Mannes ist Angela Bernbacher, die ab und zu auf den Hof kommt und an Niklas' Unschuld glaubt.
