About the author

Rudy van der Elst is a marine scientist and director of the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) located at uShaka Marine Park on Durban’s beachfront. Over several decades, Rudy has been able to contribute to research that contributes to underpinning marine conservation and wise use of resources along the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Several novel projects were initiated during this time, including the well-known Nationwide ORI Fish Tagging Project. Rudy’s main passion revolves around the conservation of marine life in the West Indian Ocean. Because South Africa shares resources and vulnerable species such as turtles, migratory fish and marine mammals with other countries, regional collaboration is important. In support of this he works regularly with partners in East Africa and the West Indian Ocean islands.
